The Nation's 16 Best Teams Today

The Field for the College Championships is set, and MSSUI has its current projected seeds.

North Carolina

While they might be written off for having the easy road to the Finals and got trounced in the Finals by Florida, this was a great weekend. Arizona and Michigan were their victims on Sunday, and only a rushed pass against Texas separated them from an undefeated Saturday. They, like Florida, have to get to Boulder first, but can be a top seed when there.

Arizona

6

Last week: 11
They joined Wisconsin as the only team to make the Top 8 at Vegas, Stanford, and Centex, but the long-lasting memory will be the first round 13-9 loss to Colorado. If they can keep their eyes on making it to Boulder, rather than just beating the team from there, then Regionals should be a breeze, and they should claim their first trip to Nationals.

Minnesota

8

Last Week: Unranked
After losing to Georgia Tech in the first round, Minnesota pulled off the unexpected, by posting wins over Stanford, Santa Cruz, and Illinois to claim a spot in the Top 8. The Central appears out of the running for a Size Bid, so Minnesota faces an even bigger task than Centex, taking down either Wisconsin or Carleton at Regionals.

Texas

The most disappointed team this past weekend was the home team, that, in spite of a 4-1 Saturday record, wasn’t playing for the Championship on Sunday. The loss to Pittsburgh held them out of the Top 8, but they recovered commendably, beating Carleton for 9th and keeping them in good position headed toward Boulder.

Illinois

Last week: 9
Two major let downs for this team on Saturday: not closing out Florida in spite of being up three breaks and finally receiving on double game point, and dropping to Minnesota 13-12 to keep them out of the Top 8. This is a team headed toward Boulder, and a difficult three seed in whoever’s pool they land.

Carleton

11

Last week: 5
In what will be the most terrifying prospect for a top seed at Nationals, this team has fallen to somewhere around the 10th seed. That would put them as the first game of the weekend for the team seeded 3rd, which right now looks like one of Colorado, Michigan, or UNC.

UC-Santa Cruz

12

Las week: 12
The win over Stanford might not even mean much in the Northwest Region with how poorly they performed the rest of the weekend. A format with many games won’t favor Karlinsky, and the Region usually ends up in pool play, but you'll notice they are the only team in the Region that stays in the Rankings.

North Carolina State

Losses on Saturday to Michigan and Wisconsin are nothing to hang their head at, even if neither was particularly close, however a loss to Brown on Sunday, that also wasn’t particularly close, is cause for concern. In a different Region, those kinds of setbacks might be an afterthought, but there’s no room for error in Statesboro.

UNC-Wilmington

Last week: 13
They hang on to the Final spot, but the glory of their trip to Stanford faded quickly in their Semi-Final loss to Dartmouth, and with Stanford bombing out, their only Saturday loss in Palo Alto. Now they play Carolina Sectionals Part One at home, before the real deal in Greenville two weeks later.
